People who frequently get neck massages to relieve muscle or back pain may face serious risks that can lead to disability. This warning comes from Professor Dr. Thiravat Hemachudha, advisor at the Oriental Medicine College of Rangsit University.
The warning responds to the recent death of a Thai singer named Chayada Praohom, who became paralyzed and bedridden after receiving neck massages several times.
Chayada had complained about shoulder and neck pain, so she went to get this type of massage. One week after the first massage, she began experiencing numbness in her legs and returned for another massage. Two weeks later, her pain worsened, she had difficulty sleeping, and went for another session. After that, the pain became unbearable and she felt increasing numbness spreading to her abdomen, chest, and legs. She continued to grow weaker, unable to lift her arms or legs, and eventually lost the ability to speak.
It is also noted that 55 patients aged 21 to 60 became disabled after receiving this neck treatment, according to a report by an American neurologist. The neurologist explained that neck massage can affect the blood vessels that supply blood to the brain. People who habitually crack their necks forcefully can also put pressure on major blood vessels, potentially causing blood clots that travel to the brain.
For this reason, we should be extremely cautious about forcefully cracking the neck or receiving intense neck massages. It is strongly advised to choose certified doctors or trained specialists.
